The town of Bel Air will host its ninth annual Maryland State Bar-B-Q Championship, Friday-Saturday, Aug. 14-15, on the corner of Bond and Thomas streets. It will feature the annual Maryland State BBQ Championship, where teams from up and down the East Coast will compete for prize money and trophies.
There will also be a children's activities area, and live music by Patrick Alban and Noche Latina, the Strykers Posse Reggae Band and the Johnny Artis Band.
Hours are Friday 4-10 p.m. and Saturday noon-10 p.m. Admission is free.

Kids rock out
Kids ages 7-17 from the Baltimore branch of the Paul Green School of Rock will perform popular songs from the Woodstock era Saturday, Aug. 15, 1 p.m., at the Power Plant Live, on the festival stage near the Inner Harbor.
The performance is part of the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock Celebration and has been "endorsed" by Woodstock creator Michael Lang.

Science for everyone
Backyard Science Days will return to the Maryland Science Center on Saturday-Sunday, Aug. 15-16, noon-4 p.m., at the center, 601 Light St. Now in its fourth year, it's a day of animal encounters and hands-on activities.
Kids can stomp on stomp rockets, make art using everyday objects and take home their own recycled bird feeder. Activities are free with paid admission. Admission starts at $14.95 general, $13.95 for seniors and $10.95 for kids ages 3-12. Call 410-685-5225.
Wine and jazz
Fiore Winery will hold its 19th annual Wine, Jazz and Art Festival on Saturday-Sunday, Aug. 15-16, noon-6 p.m., at 3026 Whiteford Road in Pylesville.
On the bill Saturday will be guitarist David Bach and the Steve Randolph Quartet. Sunday's bill will feature Funk Daddy G and the Larry Brown Quartet. The menu will include pit beef, turkey, ham and crab cakes. Admission is $15. Call 410-879-4007.
Irish culture
The Creative Alliance at the Patterson will feature the Old Bay Ceili Band, along with Billy McComiskey and the Culkin School of Irish Dance, Friday, Aug. 14, 8 p.m., at 3134 Eastern Ave. Live music will give way to Irish folk dancing.
