Arbutus Business

Area residents may not be aware that the Arbutus Business and Professional Association maintains the median grassy areas in Arbutus along Oregon and Carville avenues as well as the gateway entrance to the business district at Southwestern Boulevard and Linden Avenue.

Bryan Sheppard, Councilman Sam Moxley's legislative aide, discussed a county alternative to the private contract that the ABPA enters into each year for such service in the community.

Sheppard said the county would likely only provide grass cutting once per month and such service would not include trimming or edging.

The equipment the county uses does not allow for cutting areas that are not level terrain, and areas that become extremely overgrown would likely be sprayed with an herbicide.

In addition to the landscaping service, the ABPA has entered into an agreement for street cleaning along East Drive and the Sulphur Spring Road intersections.

While the business district certainly benefits from such work, the community as a whole is also well served by this service.

The ABPA extends its thanks to the following businesses that provided food for the Aug. 19 networking event at BW Tech @ UMBC: Paul's Restaurant (Clem Kaikis), Gianni's Italian Bistro (Greg Orendorff), The Lunchbox Lady (Connie Neiman), Hackley & Associates (Nancy Hackley) and Sorrento's of Arbutus (Mike Kostinsky).

Donations were still being received for the two door prize baskets provided by the ABPA.

Those contributors will be acknowledged in a future column.

Among the events planned for the upcoming months are the annual "Most Fun You Ever Had Networking" networking event in November and the return of the ABPA bull and oyster roast in early 2009.

The ABPA's next general meeting is Sept. 11, 6 p.m. at Leon's Triple L Restaurant.

Pierce Macgill of the Baltimore County Office of Economic Development will be the guest speaker.

The ABPA membership committee is preparing for a big fall membership drive.

Membership in the organization provides benefits such as opportunities to meet and network with other area business owners, advertising in a local directory, and in a banner page of the Arbutus Times.

Small and large businesses, in and out of the district, are welcome to applay as long as the goods or services offered to the Arbutus area community.

For a membership application or information, go to www.arbutusabpa.com or call 410-242-4642.
