A company in Phoenix has set up a network that will bring high-speed Internet service to residents and businesses in Owings Mills, Reisterstown, Butler and Pikesville.
Altius Broadband, owned by Jim Connor, of Phoenix, invested $100,000 in equipment to install microwave technology on the tallest tower in the area, owned by Maryland Public Television. The equipment output offers high-speed Internet service to those who can't get digital subscriber line service or cable. The microwave output reaches a radius of 10 to 15 miles.
Altius has no annual contract, and is currently offering specials on installation. Costs per month are $55 for residents, and $95 and up for businesses. Altius installs a receiver on a roof, then runs a line down the outside of the house and into the room where the computer is located. The receiver is the size of a shoe box or a small pizza box.
