Hereford Sports literally hums with activity. A computerized embroidery machine runs all day at the new store on Mount Carmel Road in Hereford, decorating hats, T-shirts, sweatshirts and sweatpants with team names and numbers, or with the names and logos of local businesses.
The owner, Kym Cavey, also offers screen printing, appliqued designs and heat-sealed designs.
The store has just added to its retail section and will hold an open house Saturday, Dec. 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Customers can buy merchandise off the rack or order sports clothing that can be personalized in time for Christmas.
Cavey recently did the screen printing for almost 700 football jerseys for Hereford Middle School and High School students. The maroon-and-white shirts were given yellow words and numbers. “Hereford” was on the front, “Bulls” on the back and the graduating year of the student customer on both sides.
The large order came from a spirit wear fundraiser organized by Hereford High School’s student council.
“Her prices were excellent and the shirts were just what we wanted,” said Hereford High School social studies teacher Todd Hartshorn, the student council adviser. After the order was completed, Cavey donated $400 to the student council for spirit week decorations, he said.
Cavey is no stranger to Hereford zone schools. Her husband, David, went to Fifth District Elementary and Hereford High. Her two older children, William and Hannah, attended Fifth District, Hereford Middle and Hereford High. Her daughter Kelly goes to Hereford Middle.
She ran the business out of her Hampstead home for years and most of her work involved sports teams affiliated with the Fifth District Recreation Council. In April, she moved into a small house her husband owns in Hereford, next door to his business, North Central Insurance Agency.
“I wanted to expand my services and I felt I needed a storefront,” she said.
Cavey joined the Hereford Zone Business Association and soon found customers there. She embroidered aprons that members wore at the Hereford Fall Festival, and has embroidered shirts and hats for Kingsdene Nurseries.
“I think she does very good work and she has very competitive prices,” said Kingsdene owner John Mays. “I’m a true believer in shopping locally.”
Cavey works with customers to create designs and logos on her computer, then programs the embroidery machine with the information or sets up the screen printing.
“This is a fun job,” she said. “People who come in are happy. It’s fun to work on a design and see customers smile when they come to pick it up.”
Cavey said that, once the artwork is finalized, it typically takes two weeks to process an order. The last day to order personalized clothing for Christmas is Dec. 10, she said.
The store is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. It is located at 310 Mount Carmel Road, between the Exxon gas station and Interstate 83. For details, call 443-491-3407.
