Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith presented an executive citation to John Moran, of Phoenix, who recently retired as associate dean for graduate business programs at the Sellinger School of Business and Management at Loyola College in Baltimore. Smith honored Moran’s long-term service to the county and the region.

Nancy Grasmick, the state superintendent of schools and a resident of Phoenix, received the National PTA Life Achievement Award at the Maryland Fall PTA Conference for her commitment to advocating for the education and well-being of children. The award is the highest recognition bestowed by the PTA.

The 127th recruit class graduated Dec. 18 from the Baltimore County Police Academy. Graduates assigned to the Cockeysville precinct, which covers the North County area, are officer Sean Jennings, officer Jeffrey Parsons and officer Reginald White.

The Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks  honored 51 volunteers at the “Shining Star” Awards held Dec. 15 in the County Council chambers in Towson. The volunteers, recognized for their time spent running recreation programs, coaching sports teams, teaching programs and more, were selected by local recreation councils and nature centers Recipients and the area rec council or nature center to which they volunteered are Philip Maher, Carroll Manor; Kevin and Patty Banister, Cockeysville; Bill Tarlton, Hereford; Steve and Lisa Wetzelberger, Seventh District; Todd Johnston, Prettyboy; Joe Warfield, Oregon Ridge Nature Center; Jennifer Byrd, Loch Raven, and James Dresher Jr., Police Athletic League program.

County Executive Jim Smith recently named several appointments and reappointments to  county boards and commissions: David Sparks, of Upperco, was appointed to the Agricultural Preservation Advisory Board; Harriett McGinnis, of White Hall, was reappointed to the Agricultural Preservation Advisory Board; Dr. Samuel Havrilak, of Phoenix, was reappointed to the Board of Health; David Ward, of Phoenix, was reappointed to the Commission on Arts and Sciences; and Gwendolyn McMillan, of Monkton, was appointed to the Commission for Women.
