My Perring Park neighbor, Helen Tennant, lives just across the street from me, but she is a hard person to catch up with. Helen has been very busy since she retired from teaching home economics in a Baltimore City middle school in l996.
Golf is now her passion, and she and her clubs really get around.
When I was finally able to corner her to ask for a report on her latest golfing adventures, she told me that she recently traveled to Edinburgh, Scotland, with a group of 16 other golfers who had been invited by the teaching pro from the Pine Ridge Golf Course. The pro takes a trip every year.
In the town of Abbeymore, a couple of hours' drive from Edinburgh, they played two rounds of golf. After the two rounds, they returned to Edinburgh and were able to play at St. Andrews on the Bay Golf Course, which is the scene of the British Open.
Shortly after her return to Baltimore, Helen organized a mystery golf weekend, via bus, for 47 of her adventuresome fellow golfers. The group ended up in Morgantown, W.Va., where they played a couple of rounds.
Happy Belated birthday wishes to a couple of millennium children, who are fourth- grade classmates at Immaculate Heart of Mary School. Evan Crum, who blew out nine candles on his birthday cake Sept. 21, and my grandaughter Allison Jeffries, who also blew out nine candles Sept. 22.
Francis Werneth, of Carney, tells me that he and 25 of his classmates of St. Dominic's School's Class of 1949 attended their 60th reunion Sept. 20. It began with Mass in the chapel at St. Dominic's, celebrated by Rev. William Collins, who had been a member of that graduating class, followed by a dinner at the Towson Country Club. Werneth said Collins was the celebrant at the Nuptial Mass when Francis and his wife Margaret, were wed 43 years ago at St. Dominic's.
It's not too early to register for a trip to the Pennsylvania Opry's Country Gospel Christmas Special. You can go Dec. 3 with the Towson Senior Rebels who meet at St. Isaac Jogues Church. The Opry is in the historic town of Mercersburg, Pa.
The fun starts with a buffet lunch at the Mountain Gate Restaurant, followed by the show at the Star Theatre.
The bus will depart from St. Isaac Jogues Church, 9215 Old Harford Road, at l0 a.m. The bus will stop for lunch at noon. Showtime is at 2 p.m. The bus returns to the church parking lot at 6 p.m. Cost of the trip is $81 per person. For information and reservations, contact Shirley Jewell at 410-665-2346.
