Gov. Martin O'Malley, First Lady Katie O'Malley and their children kicked off the holiday season Dec. 5 by cutting down a Christmas tree on a Maryland family farm in Germantown Dec. 5.

Area residents who want to do the same have several tree farm options not too far away in Baltimore, Howard and Carroll counties to consider.

The governor's office points out that while the popular Fraser Fir does not always fare well in Maryland soils, the Canaan has a similar appearance and is grown more easily in more locations throughout the state.

Other tree varieties grown in Maryland include the Douglas Fir, Concolor Fir, Scotch Pine, White Pine and Blue Spruce.

The following tree farms offer an opportunity for residents to cut down their own Christmas tree.
