Irvine Nature Center's Native Plant Seminar and Sale, on Aug. 23, will give your green thumb a rest.

According to Irvine's brochure, the seminar, which will take place at Garrison Forest School, 300 Garrison Forest Road in Owings Mills, will feature three speakers:

* William Cullina, of the New England Wildflower Society and author of "Native Ferns, Moss and Grasses," will present "From Emerald Carpet to Amber Wave: Serene and Sensuous Plants for the Garden."

* Jim McCormac, a specialist in ornithology at the Ohio Division of Wildlife, will discuss "Backyard and Beyond: Plant Locally, Save Globally."

* Doug Tallamy, professor and chairman of entomology and wildlife ecology at the University of Delaware and the author of "Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in our Gardens" will speak on "Gardening for Life."

The seminar will begin at 9:30 a.m., with an 11:45 a.m. break, and ends at 1:15 p.m.

A box lunch may be included in the day's events, and that will be held at Irvine's new facility at 11201 Garrison Forest Road.

Three workshops, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. will also be held at Irvine's new center. They are:

* "Growing Wildflowers from Seed," with Cullina.

* "A Walking History of the Land," with freelance ecologist Charles Davis.

* "Green Design in your Garden," with landscape architect Zolna Russel

Seminar participants will be admitted to the native plant sale at 8 a.m., while the public may shop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thirteen vendors will be selling native plants at the sale.

The cost of the seminar is $60 for Irvine members and $70 for nonmembers; workshops are an additional $25. Box lunches will be available for $12.
