Today was my older son's first day back at school. I can't believe the summer is over. You can actually feel the nip of fall in the air, especially in the evenings and early mornings. I took my younger son for a walk today with the dog and he noted the leaves already falling on South Road and wondered when we would have enough to make a pile for jumping.
We walked along the back road behind the closed-for-the-season Mt. Washington Swim Club and my little guy wanted to know WHY it was closed and when would it open again.
Once again a lovely summer was had at the Swim Club of Mt. Washington. Pool manager Sam Nuttall, assistant managers Jean Benedict and Jeff Lloyd, the pool board and the staff of lifeguards did a marvelous job watching out for the safety of children and adults alike, keeping the grounds meticulous, and never running out of Choco Tacos.
Labor Day, the last day at the pool, was standing room only. It was a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky, and seemingly the entire neighborhood showed up for one last dip. We look forward to the doors reopening on Memorial Day weekend 2009!
In case any teens in the neighborhood are interested, the swim club needs lifeguards for next season. All inquiries should be directed to Sam at 410-367-0110.
I attended an impromptu barbecue over Labor Day weekend at the always welcoming home of Phil and Stephanie Rhodes. In addition to the great number of children, all having a great time, I got to catch up with Dan and Ayelet Gincel, David and Amanda Conn, Jason and Ann Loviglio, Felice Shore and Greg Nass, Myles and Julie Norin, and Kirsten and Larry Mackin, and I had the good fortune to meet fellow neighbors Karen Sellinger and Bonnie Weissberg. It was a lovely party to end the summer.
A couple of notes for your calendars should include the following. The Mt. Washington Village Wine, Art and Jazz Festival will take place on Sunday, Sept. 28, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. In addition to the great music, food, crafts, beer and wine in the Village, plan to walk over to St. John's Church, which will hold a community flea market in its parking lot on the corner of South Road and Kelly Avenue from 1 to 4 p.m.
On Sunday, Oct. 12, as part of the fourth season of the Cylburn Chamber Music Series, Ryan de Ryke (baritone) and Eva Mengelkoch (piano) will perform "Winterreise," the song cycle for voice and piano by Franz Schubert. The concert is at 3:30 p.m. in the historic salon of the Cylburn Mansion at the arboretum. Admission is free but reservations are highly recommended. E-mail chamber.music@cylburnassociation.org or call 410-367-2217.
