Lansdowne

Folks who plan to bowl at the Fair Lanes Southwest bowling alley in Linthicum from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday should be prepared for some unusual creatures on the lanes.

Students from Lansdowne Elementary School will be taking part in a bowl-a-thon Oct. 24 and are allowed to wear costumes.

The money raised by the bowl-a-thon will be used by the school's PTA to help pay for field trips and the school's annual Mayfest.

Sponsors are still needed.

Call the school at 410-887-1408 if you can help out.

On Oct. 31, the school's annual Halloween parade begins at 2:15 p.m.

Students will parade from Alma Road to Mardo Avenue and continue to the back of the school.

I learned last month that the impact of September 11, 2001, has left an impression on even young Americans.

On September 11, 2008, I was talking with Dawn Brinkley in front of Lansdowne Elementary School when her son, Jacob Beck, came out carrying a picture frame he had made in art that day.

Jacob is 9.

The frame was made of paper and colored red, white, blue and black.

Jacob said it was for his parents to put their wedding picture in because that day was their fourth anniversary.

He then explained the meaning of the colors.

The red and blue stood for 9/11. White was for the color of his mom's wedding gown and black was for the tuxedo his dad, Doug "Puppy" Brinkley, wore.

I was amazed a 9-year-old would think that way and I am sure Jacob's parents were too.

Way to go, Jacob.

On October 3, I attended the "Goodies with Grandparents" day at the school with my 6-year-old granddaughter, Taylor.

It was my third year at the event and every year I find it to be a pleasant experience.

In addition to enjoying juice and doughnuts, grandparents can have their photo taken with their grandchild for a small fee.

This is a terrific event. I wish the other schools in the area would host similar ones as well.

Speaking of photo worthy events, on October 31, Riverview Elementary School students will parade around the block in their costumes.

The parade is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at the school, 3298 Kessler Road.

The First Baptist Church at 2320 Alma Road will host a trunk or treat party Oct. 31 on the church parking lot from 6-8 p.m.

Church members park their decorated cars on the lot and children will receive a goodie bag wit candy, stickers and tattoos as they stop by each car.

Last year, church members gave out 2,000 bags! They ran out of bags and had to go get more.

This sounds like a very safe fun time for all thanks to a lot of hard work by the parishoners.

Starlab is coming to Riverview Elementary School November 5-11.

Starlab is a portable planetarium that can be set up in a gymnasium or other open space that allows children to see the stars and constellations. It sounds very exciting.

The Riverview PTA meets November 6 at 5 p.m.

The Lansdowne Volunteer Fire Department hosts a munchkin Halloween party October 25 from noon to 3 p.m.

Munchkins must be age 13 or younger.

The party at the firehouse at 140 Laverne Ave. will offer lots of fun, including a costume contest and games with prizes awarded.

The $5 fee entitles a munchkin to a hot dog, drink and a gift bag.

Adults pay $2 for a hot dog and a drink.

Call Dianna for information or tickets at 443-829- 3058.

The department is all-volunteer and depends on donations and annual fund drives such as this party to keep the firehouse running and to pay for equipment.

Stop by to show the officers and members you appreciate their hard work and dedication.

Happy anniversary to Ron and Jan Ridgway, who celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary Oct. 21.

I would like to share with everyone a wonderful surprise I received a day after my first column appeared.

I heard from two of my dearest friends, Carol Gleason Jackson and Paula Ruffner Cooper, after having been out of touch for years.

It was great to hear from them and that they have faith that I can handle the job.

Happy Halloween to everyone and please make it a safe one by checking your candy before you eat it, staying in well lit places and being very, very careful when crossing the street.

I'm looking forward to seeing all the different costumes.
