Kelsey Sipes, a 10-year-old resident of Sparks, was given the Community Youth Service Award at the American Lung Association of Maryland's Spotlight on Excellence: 2008 Volunteer Awards Celebration on Oct. 1. Kelsey volunteered and served on an event committee, helping raise more than $1,600.

The Baltimore County Public Schools system was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for Clean Air by the American Lung Association of Maryland. The award was for the work the school system has done to promote improved indoor air quality.

Six Scouts, Ben Bemis, Bobby Jaklitsch, Randall Owen, Charlie Ryan, Bill Vaccacio and Andrew Wooden, and three adults, Jim Jaklitsch, Jeff Owen, and Scoutmaster Eugene Ruhl, from Boy Scout Troop 485 of Glencoe traveled to Islamorada Key in Florida this summer for a week of scuba diving. The Scouts were scuba certified by Aqua Ventures of Cockeysville before the trip. They completed 13 dives, including a night dive, and saw Moray eels, nurse sharks, puffer fish and tropical fish. They dove with large sea turtles, parrot fish and large groupers.
