Hampden

Although the weather has been saying otherwise, it's actually Halloween time. HalloweenFest takes place on the Avenue on Friday, Oct. 31, sponsored by the Hampden Village Merchants Association and the Kiwanis Club of Hampden-Midtown.

Costumed participants can trick-or-treat their way down Falls Road, along 36th Street and down Chestnut Avenue from 5 to 6 p.m., get goodies from participating merchants and then participate in a costume contest.

Notice how I said costumed participants? See, if you can't put on a costume and ask for candy, well, why should anyone be bothered to give you candy? The way I look at it, the more candy I have at the end of the night, the more candy I get to eat. It's sort of like reverse trick-or-treating. Well, no, technically, reverse trick-or-treating would mean trick-or-treaters go around giving out candy. Hmmm ... that's a pretty good idea, too.

Anyway, be sure to watch and/or participate in the costume contest from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in front of Ma Petite Shoe, 832 W. 36th St. Categories for all age groups include prettiest, funniest and most original costumes

On Nov. 8, it's bull roast time. From 7 to 10 p.m. at the Hampden Family Center, 1104 W. 36th St., $28 per person buys you pit beef, ham and turkey; barbecue pork; pork loin and sauerkraut; sausage with green peppers and onions; baked chicken; homemade crab soup; potato salad; cole slaw; macaroni and cheese, and beer, wine and soda.

There will be music, dancing, games, a money wheel and more. Tables of 10 are available. Sorry, no kids. They can stay home and make their own money wheels.

And speaking of the Hampden Family Center, it needs volunteers for one-on-one tutoring of Hampden elementary and middle school students. Volunteers meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. at the enter. If interested, contact Ash at 410-200-1272 or hfcvolunteer@gmail.com.

The Hampden Players will present "It's A Wonderful Life" at the Hampden United Methodist Church, 3449 Falls Road, in November. For schedule and ticket information, call 410-963-5857.
