Halloween has come and gone, daylight saving time is over, and the presidential election is now literally history. Speaking of the election, doing one's civic duty has its rewards-- at least at the Harford Hills precinct. As we exited, poll workers handed out stickers, saying "I Voted," which entitled each voter to a free cup of coffee or a donut at Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts.
So, now it's time to catch up with what's going on in Carney.
The active and vibrant Parish of St. Isaac Jogues' celebrated its 40th anniversary on Oct. 19 with a special liturgy offered by Bishop Mitchell Rozanski, who was known as" Father Mitch" when he served as associate pastor from l990 to 1993.
Dr. Barbara McLean, one of the founding parishioners, reminisced about the early days when the new parish was getting off the ground, and a reception and luncheon followed in the church hall downstairs.
"It was a great weekend for a great parish filled with great people," said Rev. Marty Hammond.
From l968 until the church was built in 1970, the weekend Masses were celebrated in Harford Hills Elementary School, and on Holy Days in the Kenilworth Apartments Community Hall. The much beloved Father Jim Cronin was appointed pastor that year. He retired in l994 when Father Marty Hammond, our present pastor, came to head the flock.
The Church Directory, published 15 years ago on the occasion of the Parish's silver jubilee, in 1993, is a real historical document, with many pages of family mug shots. (Did we really look like that?)
Another Eagle Scout soars in St. Isaac's Boy Scout Troop 124. Congratulations to Scott Koogle, who became the Troop's 80th Scout to attain the rank of Eagle.
For his project, Scott constructed six picnic tables and installed them in mulched areas near three baseball fields at school in Perry Hall.
As the stork flies over Carney, we welcome the new kid on the block! She is Marisol Irene Toledo, born Oct. 30 to Jackie and Oscar Toledo, of Perring Park. Marisol, weighing 8 pounds, 8 ounces, came into the world at Mercy Hospital. Proud grandparents are Karen and Frank Sozio, of Parkville, and Jorge-Juan Toledo -Moreno and Angeles Garcia Madrid, of Spain.
Little Marisol's cousins, James, 6, and Matthew, 1, of Carney, and Alejandra Toledo-Lanza, 3, of Spain, are delighted with the arrival of their new cousin.
Belated anniversary wishes to James and Agnes Cunningham, who celebrated 43 years of marriage Oct. l0. They share the same anniversary date with dear friends who were married 44 years on Oct. 10: Mary Ann and James Loughran. Although Mr. Loughran died six years ago, Mary Ann and Agnes like to share their happy memories.
