Jay McGinnis, of White Hall, has been named cooperator of the year for a farm over 50 acres. In 2008, as the fifth-generation operator of a 1,350-acre family grain operation, he updated his conservation plan with the installation of 2,500 linear feet of grassed waterways, which helps prevent soil erosion.
Sandra Ehnen, of Upperco, has been named cooperator of the year for a farm less than 50 acres. Working with the Soil Conservation District since 2006, she has worked through a conversion of eight acres of cropland to pasture, installed a watering trough to keep horses out of the stream and established a buffer area along the stream. Ms. Ehnen was the first recipient of cost-sharing through the District's Small Farm Water Quality Cost Share Program to install the watering trough.
The music wing at Cockeysville Middle School has been named in honor of Philip Taylor, who was principal of the school for 10 years. A plaque designating the Philip W. Taylor Music Wing was hung earlier this month. Taylor retired as principal in June 2008.
