Sundays in June are once again devoted to displays about the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad at the Old Line Museum just over the state line in Delta, Pa.
The Ma & Pa Railroad exhibit includes photos, drawings, newspaper articles, scale models, personal recollections and memorabilia. It is open from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on June 7, 14, 21 and 28.
The line, which began in 1901, went 77 miles from Baltimore to York, Pa. That was 44 miles in Maryland and 33 in Pennsylvania. It had 27 station stops between Baltimore and York, including Towson, Baldwin, Long Green, Glen Arm, Bel Air and Forest Hill. The train could also stop, when requested, at 31 flag stops.
The Ma & Pa was also known as the Milky Way because it transported milk from North County’s dairy farms into Baltimore.
June 7 features maps and pictures of the proposed route of the Ma & Pa on both sides of the Susquehanna River, as well as the proposed route between Baltimore and York.
June 14 is devoted to Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad Historical Society. Its members will display models they built from drawings and photographs, along with models of stations and buildings along the way.
June 21 features Donald Jones’ display of Ma & Pa memorabilia, possibly the largest collection known to exist.
June 28 highlights the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad Preservation Society. Its members will talk about the society’s property at Muddy Creek Forks, Pa., including eight miles of the former main line of the railroad.
The collection of photos and memorabilia of Jerome Murphy of Baldwin will be display each Sunday. His recollections of the railroad go back to childhood summers spent with his uncle, Henry Crilley, in Long Green. Crilley was stationmaster, postmaster and owned a general store.
There is no admission, but donations are appreciated. Visitors are asked to bring any items relating to the railroad.
For more details, call Murphy at 410-592-7491.
