June in Guilford is a time of great beauty. Gardeners provide a visual feast, surrounding their homes with tasteful landscaping accompanied by manicured lawns and neatly trimmed shrubbery. In Sherwood Gardens, tidy Adopt-a-Plots promise a plethora of blossoms. Often these accomplishments are acknowledged in glossy publications.
Recently, Baltimore Magazine featured a lovely spread of Rebecca Krimski's "Secret Garden." A former Ford model, Rebecca and husband Drew have lived in Guilford for 13 years. I met her a few years earlier when she and her late grandmother, Madge, were involved with the Flower Mart (Rebecca was the iconic "Flower Mart Girl").
Working with Bob Jackson Landscapes, Rebecca, always a perfectionist, has created a veritable bower within the walls and spaces of her property. An iron gate leads to a covered patio, an elegant paved terrace and an herb garden. Coolly blue hydrangeas contrast with pink Knock Out roses. Potted plants, statuary and bluestone chip paths complete the picture.
Though still particular, Rebecca has become more carefree and says, "I've learned that a garden is never perfect. You have to go with nature and be free with it."
Speaking of neighbors in the news, Adam Borden, managing director of Bradmer Foods, a food and beverage capital fund, was recently interviewed by Kojo Nnamdi on his show airing on WAMU, an NPR station in Washington.
Adam, who talked about how food entrepreneurs should get started and look for financing, says, "Kojo's show is the premier intellecual talk show in our nation's capital, and I am excited to be invited onto it."
Adam has also spoken on several programs of Radio Kitchen, a production of WYPR, the Baltimore NPR affiliate. Adam, wife Meredith, an attorney, and daughter Emma Sophie, 3, live in a classic Georgian residence facing Sherwood Gardens. To learn more about Adam's programs, go to bradmerfoods.com.
The Guilford Association's 5th annual season of "Movies in Sunken Park" begins Thursday, June 11 (rain date, June 12), at dusk (8:30 p.m.) with the hilarious family film "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" (PG-13).
Guilford, Roland Park and Homeland residents are welcome to bring family, friends, seating, snacks and bug spray to Sunken Park (Overhill and Charles) for a delightful evening under the stars. Plus, Mt. Washington Wine Co. will have beverages for purchase. Donations are appreciated to benefit Sherwood Gardens.
Many thanks to Loyola College for providing production and technical support.
"Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer/Those days of soda and pretzels and beer." Those lighthearted lyrics capture the mood of the weeks between Memorial and Labor Day. Vacations beckon with the expectation of warm summer days.
Peripatetic Joy Munster is just back from attending her (53rd) nursing class reunion at St. Mary's Hospital in London, followed by a week in Rome. In the Eternal City, Joy visited ancient landmarks, including Piazza Navona (which she recommended), and, as she promised before she left, "threw a coin in the Trevi Fountain for Carlos and Beverly."
Thanks, Joy. According to folklore, we have a Roman Holiday in our future.
We just returned from our annual jaunt to an oceanfront condo on the Florida coast. When we arrived, record-breaking torrential rains had ceased, and sunlight and blue skies prevailed. Graceful palms, bougainvillea, hibiscus and live oaks shrouded in ethereal Spanish moss offered a gorgeous venue for relaxed days at the beach (or for Carlos, on the golf course), and evenings cooled by sea breezes.
But it is wonderful to come home, where from our porch we view, not the ocean, but the sparkling waters of our gently splashing fountain. Familiar roses are flowering in lush profusions of palest blush to deepest scarlet, and billowing hydrangeas, peonies, lilies, impatiens, petunias and geraniums are in bloom in our garden.
Happy Father's Day to all of Guilford's great fathers. Hope your special day is just wonderful.
