A man chased children with a sharp weapon and then barricaded himself inside his house in the 3600 block of Paine Street in Hampden for six hours beginning at around 6 p.m. June 28, according to Baltimore City police.

No one was hurt, police said.

A family member told police that the man, a Vietnam War veteran, was despondent over the loss of a loved one and had become reclusive, said Detective Nicole Monroe, who was on the scene.

"He became agitated, so much so that he armed himself with a sharp-edged weapon and chased children throughout the street," said Monroe.

Police, including a hostage negotiator, were unable to make contact with the man. He came out after SWAT Team members used tear gas.

Monroe said the man, whose name was not available at press time, was arrested and charged with first-degree aggravated assault.
