Funeral arrangements have been announced for former Baltimore City Councilman Kenneth Harris, who is already being eulogized by friends and colleagues citywide.
A wake will be held Sept. 24 at Huber Memorial Church, 5701 York Road, at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Morgan State University’s Murphy Fine Arts Building, 2201 Argonne Drive, at 10 a.m. Sept. 25.
Community leaders will also be holding a rally at the Northwood Shopping Center on Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. The theme for the rally is “enough is enough.”
During the Sept. 22 City Council meeting, the council passed a resolution honoring Harris as a “distinguished son of Baltimore that is gone too soon.”
Each council member spoke about Harris before voting in favor of the resolution.
City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake remembered Harris’ support of Belvedere Square and Stadium Place. She recalled his work questioning whether city police were arresting people based on a quota system.
“I’m in disbelief that someone that had such a zest for life is no longer with us,” she said.
Sharon Greene Middtleton remembered that after she was appointed to the council, Harris let her chair her first committee meeting.
“The one thing that can never be taken away from us is our memories of him,” she said.
Councilwoman Belinda Conaway said that Harris’ work speaks for itself, and praised him as man of his word.
“He had integrity. If he said he would stand with you he did,” Conaway said.
Mary Pat Clarke remembered Harris as a man that would fight for what he believed in, even if it was politically unpopular. She also praised his leadership style.
“He led from the grass roots up,” Clarke said.
In an unusual move the council ceded the floor to a non-member, former Councilman Kiefer Mitchell.
Mitchell remembered a brutally cold Monday night when he and Harris walked out of City Hall for the last time as council members. He joked how Harris talked him into giving him his second pair of long underwear so he wouldn’t freeze at that night’s Baltimore Ravens game.
