Dorothy Smith, of Parkville, an alum of Mercy High School and a 2009 graduate of Boston College, was named a Fulbright Scholar.

Smith graduated from Boston College with a dual major in political science and Islamic civilization and society.

In August she will travel to Oman for her Fulbright year, and conduct research on water conservation education and awareness.

According the Fulbright Web site, the scholarship is an educational exchange program between the United States and other countries. The scholars have an opportunity "to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns."

Smith said she is looking forward to her work in Oman.

"I've always had kind of a passion for environmental issues" and the Middle East is appealing, she said, because of its mixture of cultures, nationalities, histories, religions and languages.

Prior to her journey to Oman, Smith has been studying Arabic in Jordan for two months.

She said she hopes her Fulbright experience will advance her research experience and her conversational Arabic skills.

A spokesman for Mercy High School said Smith is the first Fulbright Scholar in the school's 49-year-history.

Smith is the daughter of David and Dorothy Smith, of Parkville.
