About 257 students, as well as 37 faculty and staff, at St. John the Evangelist School in Long Green Valley came ready for the first day of instruction.

The school, one of the oldest parochial schools in Baltimore County, started as a one-room, country schoolhouse.
The school kicks off its yearlong 150th anniversary celebration with a rededication Aug. 28 at 8:45 a.m.

Other events marking the school's anniversary include a ground-breaking ceremony for a new reflection garden and an awards ceremony with members of the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
