Hereford High School is one of nine Baltimore County public high schools on the list of top U.S. high schools featured each year by Newsweek magazine.
The list, compiled in collaboration with The Washington Post, identifies 1,500 high schools, or the top six percent in the United States.
The list is based on total student participation in rigorous coursework and exams. It uses an index that divides the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and/or Cambridge tests taken by students at a school by the number of graduating seniors at that school.
Hereford was seventh among nine county high schools and was ranked 842 among 1,500. The top county high school was Dulaney High School, ranked 300.
Other county high schools and their rankings are: Towson, 411; Pikesville, 473; Eastern Technical, 540; Catonsville, 575; Owings Mills, 756; Carver Center for Arts and Technology, 1,008; and Franklin, 1,369.
The number of county students taking Advance Placement exams rose from two percent in 1992-1993 to 11.5 percent. About 69 percent of county students pass the exams, compared with 60 percent nationwide.
