The East Coast's biggest fishing event, the Fishing Expo and Boat Show will mark a quarter century in existence when it takes place Thursday-Sunday, Jan. 8-11, in the Maryland State Fairgrounds' Cow Palace. As in years past, there will be a large display of freshwater, saltwater and offshore fishing equipment as well as some 400 boats. There will also be dozens of related seminars. Hours are Thursday-Friday noon-8 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.-8 p.m., and Sunday 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Admission is $8 general, $4 for kids ages 10-14 and free for anyone younger. Motorcycle madness

Cyclists will once again zoom into town for the annual presentation of the Toyota Arenacross Series, happening Friday-Sunday, Jan. 9-11, at the 1st Mariner Arena. This California-based sport features motorcycle riders competing for prizes while racing and performing stunts on a makeshift dirt track. Showtimes are Friday-Saturday 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 10 a.m. Admission runs $20 general and $8 for kids. Call 410-347-2010.

Italian cooking

Sotto Sopra Restaurant will offer a special menu, Dinner with Daniela, Tuesday, Jan. 13, at 405 N. Charles St. For the occasion, Chef Daniela Useli will create a home-styled dinner with items from her native Sardinia. Highlights will include pork tenderloin cooked with white wine, garlic and anise seeds and crispy dough filled with cooked red chicory with onion and white wine. Open reservations are being offered. Creative screenings

The Creative Alliance will kick off its series of independent film screenings with a premiere of local filmmaker Chris LaMartina's horror film "One Foot in the Grave," on Friday, Jan. 9, 8 p.m., at 3134 Eastern Ave. The film features performances by John Waters film veteran George Stover and 98 Rock DJ Shortbus Don. New Year's history

The Hampton National Historic Site will again host a program, New Year's Traditions, Sunday, Jan. 11, from 1 to 4 p.m., at 535 Hampton Lane in Towson. The event will feature historic parlor games, living history exhibits and a look at how traditions such as the singing of "Auld Lang Syne" came to be. There will also be carriage rides available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Admission is free. Call 410-823-1309.

For new moms

The Maryland Science Center is inviting new mothers to step into fitness with a walking program, Stroller Strides, taking place Friday, Jan. 9, and continuing Wednesdays and Fridays throughout the month. Moms can bring their babies and do power walking and intervals of body toning using exercise tubing and their strollers. Admission is $14.50 general and $10 for children. Call 410-685-5225.
