The gas station and convenience store on Mt. Carmel Road in Hereford that sold contaminated gas in May and June will be closed all summer.
Crews hired by ExxonMobil hammered plywood over the windows of the gas station on July 2, said Patrick Meadowcroft, who runs the station. He had kept the convenience store open since the gas pumps were removed on June 9.
He said he was told by Exxon officials to expect a Sept. 1 reopening. A spokeswoman for the oil company did not return phone calls to confirm the date.
Officials with Maryland’s Department of the Environment will oversee work that includes digging up the old, 20,000-gallon gas tanks and replacing them with new ones, said Herb Meade, administrator of the MDE’s oil control program.
He said it should take about two weeks to remove the double-walled tanks. The installation of new ones is expected to take longer, he said.
So far, at least 80 people have notified Exxon to report vehicle problems after buying gas from mid-May to early June. A salt solution leaked into the gas tank through a crack in the wall meant to separate it from the gas.
Anyone with problems is asked to call Exxon’s 24-hour hotline number at 1-877-346-0307.
