Sen. Barbara Mikulski is spending her birthday today in the hospital awaiting surgery for a broken ankle.

Mikulski, a four-term U.S. senator who turns 73 today, broke her ankle in three places while walking down steps Sunday night, according to a brief statement released by her office on Monday.

She is awaiting surgery at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore.
