A 65-year-old Upperco woman was sentenced to eight years in prison after she pleaded guilty Tuesday morning to one count of automobile manslaughter and one count of causing a life-threatening injury while under the influence of alcohol.

Mary Ann Farevaag, of the 16800 block of Ridge Road, entered her plea in Baltimore County Circuit Court, according to a statement from State’s Attorney Scott Shellenberger.

Farevaag was charged in a Dec. 16, 2008, car crash on Black Rock Road near Trenton Road. The accident occurred about a mile from Farevaag’s home.

Prosecutors said the vehicle Farevaag was driving crossed the center line at 8:40 a.m. and struck another vehicle being driven by Sara Daniel, 72. Farevaag’s vehicle also struck several other vehicles before ending up in a field.

Richard Daniel, 47, of Hampstead and the son of Sara Daniel, was killed in the collision. Sara Daniel sustained life-threatening injuries that required extensive treatment, prosecutors said.

Farevaag’s blood alcohol level, tested two hours after the accident, was found to be .25 — more than three times the legal limit.

Farevaag was sentenced by Judge Susan Souder to 10 years in prison with all but five suspended on the manslaughter charge. She was sentenced to an additional three years in jail on charge of causing life-threatening injuries. The sentences will be served consecutively.
