A Monkton man was killed in a crash at the intersection of Corbett and York Road in Monkton just before 9 a.m. today.
Timothy Wheatley, 48, of 1838 Corbett Road, was killed after his 1999 Honda Civic was hit by a United Parcel Service truck. Wheatley’s 9-year-old daughter, Sarah, was injured in the accident and taken to Sinai Hospital and then Johns Hopkins Children Center, according to Bill Toohey, a Baltimore County police spokesman.
As Tuesday morning, a hospital spokesperson said Sarah Wheatley was listed in critical condition.
Sarah is a fourth-grader at Sparks Elementary School. Sparks principal Sharon Kearney said Timothy Wheatley was an active volunteer at his daughter’s school.
Cathy Walrod, Hereford Middle School principal, said Wheatley came to the school’s career day and talked about his old job as sports editor of the
Baltimore Sun. Wheatley’s son, Will, is an eighth-grader at Hereford Middle. His oldest son, David, is a sophomore at Hereford High School.
At the time of his death, Timothy Wheatley was the newspaper’s business editor. Wheatley joined the
Sun in May 2006 as the assistant managing editor for sports and earlier this year was named business editor.
Toohey said police received the accident call at 8:54 a.m. He said Wheatley’s car was pulling out of Corbett Road to go southbound on York Road when it was broadsided by the truck.
Deborah Curtis of Glen Rock, Pa., who was two cars behind the UPS truck as it drove northbound on York Road, said she believes the traffic light was red for York Road traffic.
She said she had begun to slow down as she approached the light, looked over at her son, and when she looked up again, the UPS truck had already hit the car.
The truck then broke through two rows of painted wooden fences and came to rest in the field of Marathon Farm, a horse farm owned by Peter Angelos.
Police identified the UPS driver as Kevin Callahan, 28, of the unit block of Wellhaven Circle, in Owings Mills. He was not injured in the accident, Toohey said.
