The Riderwood Elementary School Student Council Association will host a read-a-thon at the school Friday, Nov. 13, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., in memory of the school's former media specialist, the late Bob Hallett.

Students will collect pledges, which will be used to purchase a commemorative plaque for the school's library. Any excess pledges will be donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in Hallett's honor.

Hallett, who was 60 when he died last month of a form of leukemia, had invented a fictional character, Red Reader, to motivate children to read.

The event will feature faculty and staff reading Hallett's favorite books, and students will visit classrooms to hear stories. Teachers are requesting 25-cent pledges from each child who enters a classroom. Baked goods and water will be available for purchase.

For more information, call Heather Buchman, Kathy Dehart or Lynn Detter at 410-887-3568.
