Towson University has announced that the school will be the first four-year institution in Maryland to become a smoke-free campus beginning next school year.
The university approved a policy that will make its 328-acre campus entirely smoke-free beginning Aug. 1, 2010.
According to an announcement Wednesday, the policy aims to reduce the health risks associated with exposure to secondhand smoke, and reduce health costs associated with smoking,
TU President Robert Caret said he was pleased with the policy, noting “faculty, staff and students came together to create this policy to ensure everyone’s right to clean air and to help promote healthy lifestyles.”
Smoking was already not allowed in buildings on campus.
But the new policy means no smoking in garages, sidewalks, parking lots, open spaces or athletic areas — including the Bill Bateman’s restaurant on campus.
The policy was approved by the TU President’s Council following discussions with campus groups and open forums for faculty, staff and students.
Towson’s Smoke-Free Task Force drafted an initial policy more than a year ago with input from representatives of the Student Government Association, the TU Staff Council and administrative offices. The feedback was incorporated into the final policy.
In preparation for the smoke-free switch, TU’s Dowell Health Center is offering free individual smoking-cessation assessments and classes in partnership with the Baltimore County Department of Health. These services will be available for students, faculty and staff.
