Have you ever wanted to be a farmer? The Maryland New Farmer Trainee Program might help you become one.

The program is recruiting farmer trainees for next year.

Trainees will get hands-on experience and classroom knowledge over a one-year period. They will attend about eight two-hour workshops, go to an agricultural conference, tour farms and train six hours one day a week from April through October. The training will hopefully give farmers-to-be the skills they need to start their own farms, said Trish Moore, with the University of Maryland Extension.

Mentors for the program will be Jack and Becky Gurley, from Calvert’s Gift Organic Farm, in Sparks, and Greg and Karen Lambrecht, from Serpent Ridge Vineyard, in Westminster.

People interested in participating should send four copies of a cover letter, resume and references (at least three names with contact information) to University of Maryland Extension Office, 1840 York Road, Suite J, Timonium, MD 21093. For more information, e-mail Cathy Tipper at crtipper@aol.com by Dec. 4.
