Nature lovers can enroll in the new Irvine Institute for Environmental Education that begins in January at the Irvine Nature Center.

The institute will offer educational courses for adults who are interested in natural science, ecology and the environment. Courses will include classroom and outdoor instruction.

The winter session begins Jan. 14 and will run through March. The spring session begins in April and runs through June.

Classes for the winter and spring sessions include Winter Tree Ecology and Identification, Principles of Ecology, the Owls and Woodpeckers of Maryland, Introduction to Environmental Education, the Fascinating World of Maryland's Native Plants, Introduction to Avian Biology and Ecology and Beekeepers Short Course.

Instructors hail from the nature center, Towson University, the U.S. Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventative Medicine, the Maryland Zoo and Johns Hopkins University.

Irvine Nature Center is at 11201 Garrison Forest Road, in Owings Mills.
