An 18-year-old Monkton resident lost his life in a June 28 crash near Jacksonville.

Steven Radford, of Stansbury Mill Road, was a passenger in a four-door Infiniti sedan driven by Derek Campbell, also 18 and a resident of Stansbury Mill Road, when the crash occurred, police said. Radford and Campbell graduated May 30 from Dulaney High School in Timonium.

Traveling east at 2 a.m. on Stansbury Mill Road, away from Jarrettsville Pike, Campbell lost control of the car at a high speed, said Cpl. Michael Hill, a spokesman for the county police department.

The car crashed into trees, and Radford was trapped in the vehicle, Hill said. He was extracted by emergency crews and taken by helicopter to the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, where he died, Hill said.

Campbell was transported to Sinai Hospital in Baltimore with nonlife-threatening injuries, Hill said.

Evidence of alcohol was detected at the scene, he said.
