Some 750 Sparks and Monkton households will be affected when a trash service under contract to the county changes its pickup date.
Probst Refuse Service, of White Hall, now picks up trash on Thursdays in areas along York Road in Sparks and Monkton, along Corbett and Carroll roads in Monkton, and along Sparks and Glencoe roads.
Beginning Aug. 6, the company will pick up trash in those areas on Wednesdays, said Joe Pusloski, a supervisor in the county’s Bureau of Solid Waste.
The objectives are to reduce fuel consumption and give Probst employees Saturdays off, Pusloski said. Rather than picking up yard waste in Timonium on Saturdays, as they had been doing, they will now pick it up on Thursdays, he said. Probst already was picking up trash in Sparks on Wednesdays, providing an opportunity for greater efficiency.
And while the county won’t benefit immediately, it could when the company’s contract is renewed.
“If everyone is saving money, it’s going to get passed on,” he said. Further, Pusloski said, “If I’m saving a gallon of gas, it’s a gallon that doesn’t get used.”
Regular unleaded gas now costs more than $4 per gallon on average in Maryland, up from less than $3 per gallon a year ago, according to the American Automobile Association.
