Michael Phelps and other Maryland Olympians will be honored with a parade through Towson on Oct. 4.

County Executive Jim Smith, along with Gov. Martin O’Malley and Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon, announced the festivities Sept. 9 at Towson High School.

The county will host a “Parade of Gold”  at 3 p.m. The route will wind through the heart of Towson, Rodgers Forge and past Towson High School “past the neighborhoods where Michael and Katie (Hoff) grew up,” Smith said.

Hoff, an Olympian and a Towson resident, also will appear at the parade. Olympic athletes from all over Maryland will also be invited.

O’Malley and Dixon announced that the city will host a fireworks display at Fort McHenry to honor Olympians at 7 p.m. the day of the parade.

The cost of the entire day of events is expected to be about $300,000. O’Malley said a committee has been established to raise private funds for the event.
