Park on roundabout to honor Olympians

Baltimore County plans to dedicate the small park on the Towson Roundabout on which a Shell gas station once stood to the county Olympians, according to an announcement County Executive Jim Smith made during Saturday night’s Star Spangled Olympic Celebration Oct. 4 at Fort McHenry.
Smith dubbed it Baltimore County Olympic Park.
Noting Michael Phelps will be the first Olympic athlete honored in the park, he presented Rodgers Forge resident Debbie Phelps — MIchael Phelps mother — with a framed artist’s rendition of the newly named park.
Phelps held the world’s attention in event after event as he set 7 world records, won 8 gold medals and established himself as “one of the world’s greatest athletes,” Smith said, citing Phelps’ humility, well-grounded poise, self-discipline, concentration and hard work.
