A preliminary hearing is scheduled Nov. 7 for a Lake Walker man accused of raping a Towson University student.
A cell phone found at the scene of a rape in Baltimore County Oct. 6 connected the suspect to a rape in Baltimore City that took place three days earlier.
Ian Alexander Murphy, 24, of the 1000 block of Cedarcroft Road, was arrested and charged with the Oct. 6 rape of a 21-year-old Towson University student that took place in the 7600 block of Knollwood Road.
While investigating that assault, county police found at the scene a cell phone that had been in the possession of another woman who had been assaulted Oct. 3 at the Inner Harbor.
In that case, according to Baltimore police spokeswoman Det. Nicole Monroe, the 22-year-old victim met a man downtown near City Hall while waiting for a ride home after getting off work around 2 a.m. on Oct. 3.
He suggested that they take a walk and the pair went to Federal Hill and then to the Inner Harbor. The man then invited the victim to his hotel room on the waterfront but instead led the woman to a secluded spot, forcing her to the ground between two tractors, where he assaulted her.
In the attack that occurred three days later on Oct. 6, a man approached the university student, who was returning from the grocery store at about 1 a.m. in the 7900 block of Knollwood Road, and asked for directions.
The man implied he had a gun then forced the victim to the 7600 block of Knollwood Road, where he attacked her. A county police spokesman, said tips from citizens allowed the police to obtain a warrant for Murphy’s arrest.
While investigating the Towson rape, county police found a cell phone at the scene. After conferring with city police, they learned that the phone had been in the possession of the victim in the Oct. 3 rape.
An article of clothing left at the scene of the city attack had DNA evidence linking Murphy to the Inner Harbor scene, Monroe said.
The victim then identified Ian Alexander Murphy as her attacker from a photo line-up, Monroe said.
Murphy is currently being held in the Baltimore County Detention Center without bail on multiple first-degree rape charges. The preliminary hearing will be held in Baltimore County District Court.
