The Baltimore County Revenue Authority is replacing 130 meters on Allegheny Avenue and in parking lots between Washington Avenue and the Towson Roundabout with seven pay boxes.
The authority expects to complete the installation of the boxes by the beginning of next week, but they won’t be in operation until signs have been erected in the areas where the meters used to be directing drivers to the new boxes, according to Wayne Mixdorf, who manages parking for the authority.
The boxes, which offer a maximum of two hours of parking for $1 an hour — just as the individual meters do, are similar to those used in downtown Baltimore.
The new boxes will accept debit and credit cards, as well as coins — but not dollar bills — and issue a receipt that is to be displayed on the dashboard of the vehicle.
The new system is expected to make its debut in about two weeks, according to Mixdorf, who said the authority will make a public announcement and provide help for customers during the initial foray, which will occur on a Monday
Until then, the box displays will read “Coming Soon.”
