Want to tap your feet? Come on down to Perry Hall United Methodist Church on the first Saturday of each month.

That's when the church draws in a couple dozen aspiring folk musicians and enthusiasts to its Perry Hall Folk Music Night.

The open mike event is held from 7 to 10 p.m. at the church, located at 9515 Belair Road.

Host Neil Zimmerman and his wife, Debbie, started the event because he wanted an opportunity "to dust off my guitar and use it sometimes," he said

Zimmerma generally opens the show at 7 p.m.

"I set the tone," he said. "I'll perform to an empty room, but I prefer people to listen to me."

Folk music refers to a wide variety of music, he said. Most performers share original compositions and they usually sing and play the guitar, he said.

Folk Music Night also features a guest performer, whom Zimmerman described as someone who is more established, more polished and typically has released a CD.

"I try to up the quality a little by providing a feature performer," he said.

Upcoming feature performers include Susan Souza (www.susansouza.com) on Saturday, Jan. 3; Steve Warner & the Rolling Coyotes(www.stevewarnermusic.com/Coyotes) on Feb. 7; and Uncle John Sawbriar (www.soundclick.com/unclejohnsawbriar) on March 7.

Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Open mike performers can sign up at the door.
