Baltimore County's Department of Public Works will host a meeting next week to give North County residents a preview of construction projects on local roads and bridges before the equipment, trucks and detour signs show up.

Residents can hear about which roads are slated to be resurfaced next year, and what bridges will be replaced or repaired over the next two years.

The meeting will be Tuesday, April 14, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the cafeteria of Hereford High School, 17301 York Road.

Although the county's annual survey of road conditions is not yet complete, resurfacing projects are already planned for Trenton Mill, Freeland, Graystone, McComas and Carroll roads, according to David Fidler, spokesman for the public works department.

He said 20 to 25 miles of rural roads will be resurfaced next year.

Roadwork is also planned for Cuba Road, and the county's Bureau of Traffic Engineering is considering making Philpot Road a one-way street.

Some 13 rural bridges will be worked on over the next two years in the county, and most are in North County. Construction could begin as early as August on Gunpowder Road bridge over George's Run. The Mount Zion Road bridge over Piney Creek is slated for construction by summer of 2010.

Fidler said engineers are also looking at the conditions of three bridges on Gores Mill Road, and one on Dairy Road. Three other bridges are in the final design stage for renovations: Eagle Mill Road bridge over Little Falls, Harris Mill Road bridge over Ebaugh's Creek and Thornton Mill Road bridge over Western Run.

And, two bridges are almost ready to go to design stage. They are on Vernon Road and Yeoho Road.

The April 14 meeting is a result of new rural road standards adopted by Baltimore County aimed at preserving the character of rural roads and bridges.

Community involvement through annual meetings was a stipulation of those standards. For details, call the department at 410-887-2171.
