Two people were found dead on Friday in a fire that occurred in Upperco on the western edge of Baltimore County.
Elise Armacost, a spokeswoman for the Baltimore County Fire Department, said a man and a woman were found dead on the second floor of the two-story farmhouse in the 17100 block of Pleasant Meadow Road.
The discovery was made by members of the Arcadia Volunteer Fire Department, which responded to a call at 4:55 a.m. for an unknown fire. Firefighters discovered the blaze, found the two people inside and carried the bodies out of the building, she said.
The fire was brought under control after 7 a.m., Armacost said.
Police identified the victims as husband and wife Emmett Robert Payne, 61, and Sandra Gay Payne, 45.
According to Baltimore County, the fire began in a chair in a second-story living room (the farmhouse was divided into two apartments, one on each floor), according to investigators who estimated the fire caused $260,000 in damage.
The fire was considered a one-alarm blaze, but Armacost said additional equipment responded to the scene from nearby stations in Carroll County.
