Bob Harris, of Monkton, lost a combination garage and barn, a motor home, a truck and several motorcycles in an early morning fire June 20, but he said his neighbors helped save his house

“If it wasn’t for my neighbors, I don’t know what would have happened,” he said. “Tim Keck grabbed a hose and started wetting down the deck and I sprayed water on the walls. All of my neighbors have been great.”

Harris said the smell and sounds of the fire in the building next to his house woke him up. He and neighbors were able to get three horses out of the barn, but the fire was too hot for the men to save anything else.

The spooked horses took off and eventually stopped further down Troyer Road, in the middle of the street. Members of the Maryland Line Volunteer Fire Company had to stop and get the horses out of the road so they could get to the fire.

In all, 27 pieces of equipment responded to the fire at 17207 Troyer Road, said fire department spokeswoman Elise Armacost. The call came in at 3:11 a.m. and the first engines arrived at 3:45 a.m., only to find the building engulfed in flames, she said.

In addition to Maryland Line, firefighters came from Hereford; Parkton; Jacksonville; Butler; Long Green; York, Pa., and Harford County, she said.

The fire was under control about 6 a.m. Damages were estimated at $160,000 and no cause has yet been determined, Armacost said.

Harris said the horses are staying at nearby Johnson’s Delight farm. He has managed to salvage only a few tools from the debris.
