Yes, we drive faster than posted limits (and way too close to each other for those speeds). No one has found a better way to slow us down than tickets -- and apparently they don't work very well.

We know speed kills. Lost in our own moments, we don't care. Television and cable news show us the more spectacular wrecks and push to get the shots of emotional victims and survivors, but that doesn't work either.

Maybe science is the answer: Create new tires and a road surface with a frictional element that prevents excessive speed by generating a vibration that is uncomfortable to travelers.

One downside of our interstate road system is that, by limiting access and going in a straighter line, it enables us to drive faster. So we do.

We don't need speed control. We need behavior modification. I suggest we form a national team composed of the same people who have worked so hard to stop us (or keep us) from smoking. If they are successful, their next job will be to keep us from overeating.
