I read in the Oct. 15 edition a letter from state Sen. Bobby Zirkin and Delegates Jon Cardin, Dan Morhaim and Dana Stein about 48 acres acquired for Reisterstown Regional Park.

Their letter said they plan to "offer an opportunity for greater recreational diversity to the park. (The park) already features numerous 'active' recreational facilities, including lighted ball diamonds, athletic fields and an indoor sports facility with a multi-purpose field and ice rink."

I am disturbed that their plan reflects no concern about the absence of a middle school in Owings Mills. Owings Mills has to be the only large community in Baltimore County that doesn't have a middle school. Residents must send their children to Pikesville, Randallstown or private school because no local middle school exists.

The priority should be education over recreation.

How about these elected officials acquire some land in Owings Mills on which we can finally build a middle school?

We agree with Cary Myers that Owings Mills needs a middle school, and we have done exactly what is asked. Working with the community, we recognized the lack of a middle school in Owings Mills. Accordingly, as state legislators, we fought to get 54 acres of state land, part of the extended Rosewood property at Gwynbrook and Owings Mills Blvd., to be set aside for a middle school. That was done several years ago. Now it's up to the County and the school system to close the deal and designate funds to build the school. We will support them in that effort. Sincerely, Sen. Bobby Zirkin, Del. Dan Morhaim, Del. Dana Stein, Del. Jon Cardin

With all due respect to the Senator and the Delegates, I think your response is a just a setup for a future election bid. Having talked to some long time Owings Mills residents, the promise of a middle school has been an issue for over 15 years now. In the meantime, the population of the area has continued to grow. Putting the responsibility for moving forward on the County and school system is mess. It looks like all 3 of you are at fault. Meanwhile, while you all pretend to care about the residents, parents have to "settle" for Deer Park Middle, work 2+ jobs to get our children into private school or quite frankly plan for another community to live in once the kids matriculate from elementary school. On June 15, 2008 the Baltimore Sun reported that "Some of Rosewood's land has been set aside for a public school, and a large parcel has been donated for a nature preserve. But some land has also been sold off to developers for houses and businesses." Then on November 12, 2009 it was reported that "Shoshana S. Cardin School for students in grades nine through 12 will purchase 55 acres of the property in Owings Mills from The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore, which had abandoned its development concept for the site" and "Stevenson University ... is pursuing its interest in acquiring the remaining Rosewood property." No mention of a middle school. Watch fellas, this will come back to bite you next election time.
