Lacrosse: Area all-stars compete against best
Five Gilman players selected to South squad

An unprecedented number of players from Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference champion Gilman will lead the South boys All-Stars against the North at 8 p.m. on Saturday at Johnny Unitas Stadium in the Under Armour All-America Lacrosse Classic, the centerpiece game of a weekend of lacrosse.
The five Greyhounds -- attackmen Marcus Holman and Davey Emala, midfielders Jack Doyle and Greg McBride and defenseman Harry Prevas -- will join longstick Chris Lightner and attackman Patrick Fanshaw of Calvert Hall as the only area performers on the South squad.
Lightner will attend Johns Hopkins University while Fanshaw has signed with Loyola College. Holman and McBride are headed to the University of North Carolina, Emala is going to Georgetown University, Prevas to the University of Virginia and Doyle to Harvard University.
Other notables in the contest for the South will be University of Maryland recruits Jess Bernhardt of Longwood, Fla. and Landon Carr of University Place, Wa. Bernhardt is a defenseman and Carr a midfielder.
North defenseman John Fennessy will enroll at Towson University in the fall.
The South girls, who will play at before the boys at 5:30 p.m. also boast a slew of local players, including midfielders Kelsi Bozel (Georgetown) and Erin Laschinger (Virginia) of Notre Dame Prep, Bryn Mawr attacker Annie Thomas (Virginia) and midfielder Sarah Matz (Maryland), defense wing Illiana Sanza (Maryland) of St. Paul's School for Girls and midfielder Kitty Cullen (University of Florida), attacker Molly Fernandez (Penn State) and midfielder Colby Rhea (Florida) of Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference champion McDonogh.
The Underclassmen Games, which will be played Saturday and Sunday, feature teams from Baltimore that will compete against rivals from Long Island, Upstate New York, Midwest, Philadelphia, New England, New Jersey and Washington, D.C.
The Baltimore girls will be coached by NDP's Mary Bartel and the team boasts goalie Liz Colgan (NDP), midfielder Taylor Cummins (Hereford), defense wing Annie Farrell (Towson High), attacker Hannah Franklin (McDonogh), defender Meghan Helm (NDP), attack wing Sydney Peterson (NDP), midfielder Meggie Ramzy (Roland Park Country School), midfielder Julia Reimer
(Hereford), midfielder Caroline Seats (Roland Park), attack wing Hillary Sorg (Maryvale), attacker Covie Stanwick (NDP) and goalie Hannah Whiteley (Dulaney).
The Baltimore boys, coached by Loyola Blakefield's Jack Crawford, feature attackman Rustin Bryant (Hereford), defenseman Emmett Cahill (Loyola), midfielder Phil Castronova (Calvert Hall), midfielder Alex Chay (St. Paul's), midfielder Mike Faby (St. Paul's), attackman Patrick Foster (Boys' Latin), attackman Jeff Fountain (St. Paul's), attackman Tyler Frederick (McDonogh), midfielder Zach Linkous (St. Paul's), defenseman Joe Meurer (McDonogh), defenseman Alec Mitchell (St. Paul's), defenseman Mike Packo (Loyola), midfielder Tony Rossi (Calvert Hall), golaie Mike Smith (Loyola), midfielder Ryan Tucker (Gilman) and midfielder Robbie Zoppo (Calvert Hall).
