Rest assured, Marcus Holman wanted his South All-Stars to beat the North All-Stars in the fourth Under Armour Lacrosse Classic at Johnny Unitas Stadium last weekend.

The senior attackman from Gilman -- one of five Greyhounds on the South squad that included midfielders Greg McBride and Jack Doyle, defenseman Harry Prevas and attackman Davey Emala -- made sure that happened when he scored three goals and added a pair of assists in the South's 19-16 triumph.

But he also wanted to have fun, enjoy the atmosphere and rub elbows with players from as far away as Portland (Ore.), Tacoma (Wash.) and Dallas.

Saying the South players had "a chip on our shoulders," Holman was ready to help his team win for the first time in the series.

"People were hyping the North," Holman said. "And they have a lot of great players, but we matched their intensity right from the beginning."

He added that his teammates felt it was the South's time.

"We said, 'Why not us?'" Holman said.

And, Holman said, why not meet some fellow players from the Northwest and Deep South to see what they could do?

"That's the beauty of these games," Holman said. "Meeting guys from other parts of the country. I just had a blast."

The University of North Carolina recruit noticed one of those players -- Landon Carr, from suburban Tacoma -- who will play for the Tar Heels' Atlantic Coast Conference rival the University of Maryland next spring. The midfielder had three goals for the winners.

Portland native Peter Baum, headed to Colgate University, chipped in with a goal and two assists.

As far as locals go, Doyle and Emala had a goal each for the South while Calvert Hall's Patrick Fanshaw had a pair of goals for the South.

The Loyola College-bound Reisterstown Fanshaw dodged past a couple of North defenders before scoring his second goal with 1:41 remaining to dash the North's hope of a fourth consecutive victory.

The southpaw attackman said he was thrilled with the atmosphere and the competition at the event played in front of 2,364 fans.

"It was just a great experience playing against those northern guys from Long Island and New Jeresy," he said. "They're great players.

"It was always in the back of your head (that the South was winless)," Fanshaw said. "It was great to be on the first South team to win."
