The Dulaney coed ice hockey team is looking for a few good players.

By their count, team organizers Connor Brown, Taylor Batton and Elsa Manning have approximately 20 prospective players for their new venture.

The idea germinated from a couple of casual conversations between Brown and Batton last year.
The duo and Manning are veterans of the Baltimore Stars program that plays at a variety of local venues, including Harford County’s Ice World, Mount Pleasant Ice Arena and the new Reisterstown Sportsplex.

“We talked about how cool it would be to have a team,” said Batton, a rising senior at Dulaney. “We thought we might as well give it a try.”

Brown, who played on the Boys’ Latin varsity as a freshman before transferring to Dulaney last fall, said that a dozen people showed up for the initial team skate-around.

“We had five or six more people who were working, and they couldn’t make it,” he said. “Since then, we’ve had two more people who say they want to play.”

The Lions will be in the Maryland State Hockey League’s public school division, with contests primarily against teams from Howard County.

Brown said he had no qualms about playing with or against girls, considering that he was on a Stars’ line with Manning and another girl.
By the way, checking is allowed in the league.

“She was actually one of the better players on our team,” Brown said about the daughter of former Baltimore Blast soccer goalie Scott Manning.
Brown recounted how one time he and Manning met on the ice, and he was the one who suffered most.

The collision, he said, caught him “off balance,” and left him sprawled on the ice.
“It was pretty funny,” he added.

That’s one of the reasons he and Batton aren’t worried about playing with or against girls.
“Were not going to go after (girls to check),”  Batton said
.
Yet, Brown said he wouldn’t hold back from “giving them a nudge” if the situation warranted it.
Mostly, they’re hoping to have a good time playing a sport they love.

Manning, currently a member of the all-female Susquehanna Rapids team, said that being a girl playing against mostly male opponents is not as dangerous as one might think.

"Actually, most of the guys treat me like a girl, which can be good and bad," she said, noting that her teammates would pass her the puck knowing that she might not be the recipient of any hard checks.

Regardless, she and her buddies are hoping that they have a good turnout — the team is limited to Dulaney students — for the first practice Aug. 20, 6:15 to 7:15 p.m., at the Reisterstown Sportsplex.
