While it's unfair to say Boys' Latin gave away the game with Severn at J. Duncan Smith Field in Roland Park yesterday afternoon, the Lakers clearly didn't help themselves in the 21-20 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference setback.

"I'm not trying to take anything away from Severn," Boys' Latin coach Ritchie Schell said. "They played well. But we shot ourselves in the foot too many times."`

Even at that, the Lakers very nearly sent the game into overtime after powerful junior running back Patrick Steele (25 carries, 153 yards) rumbled into the end zone for the third time in the game with 5:10 remaining to pull the Lakers (3-3 overall, 2-3 conference) to within a point.

Then, a missed extra point kept the deficit intact.

BL's final two possessions -- both from inside their own 28-yard line -- ended with quarterback Michael Kantz's long throws being intercepted. On both occasions, the 5-7, 155-pound junior was flushed out of the pocket before he attempted to make a big play down the field.

"Our offensive line has been a little bit inconsistent this year," Schell said. "We just made too many mistakes."

Severn, playing without standout senior running back Noah Pyles, still made enough big plays to garner the hard-fought road victory. Twice The Admirals (2-5, 1-4) went to the air to fleet senior wideout Alex Jones for scores, the last of which covered 61 yards and produced the winning margin with 26 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

The Laker defense, spearheaded by senior end Davon Randolph, junior tackle Stephen Andes, junior linebacker Ryan Jarvis and sophomore linebacker Joey Weidner, kept the visitors in check the rest of the way, but it was too late.

BL jumped out to an early lead on Steele's 14-yard run that capped off an 11-play drive. Senior Junior kicker R.G. Keenan's conversion kick made it, 7-0.

The Admirals answered with a couple of scores, including a 20-yard halfback option pass midway through the third quarter to forge a 14-7 advantage. An ensuing Laker rally was fueled by a 36-yard connection from Kantz to senior wideout Jack Rice on an acrobatic grab at the enemy 22.

Four Steele runs later, the game was deadlocked for the second time.

After the Admirals regained the lead, junior Ryan Rubenstein's fumble recovery at Severn's 42 put the Lakers in perfect position to draw even.

It just never happened.
